Charcoal combined with silver for the treatment of chronic wounds

ActisorbTM dressing with silver consists principally of activated carbon impregnated with metallic silver. Activated charcoal can adsorb and neutralise the bacterial toxins locally released and reduce the inappropriate high level of cytokines in wound exudate of chronic wounds. Incorporating silver actively participates in decreasing bacterial bioburden and biofilm growth, a major factor of chronicity.Actisorb silver dressing is a therapeutic alternative when treating chronic wounds stuck in an inflammatory stage. It seems to be particularly useful for the management of strongly colonised wounds and even of heavily exuding ulcers if combined with a high-absorbing secondary dressing, such as a foam dressing.
