For approximately two millennia, the criteria of the Roman Celsus have been used to diagnose infection: redness, swelling, heat, and pain. These criteria have been employed for all infections, regardless of the tissues involved. Each criterion relates to the inflammatory response and, therefore, may be regarded as “limited” insofar as other, noninflammatory signs and symptoms of infection are excluded.
