NICE publishes advice on Prevena Incision Management System
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recently published a Medical Innovation Briefing (MIB) for Prevena™ Incision Management System (KCI, An Acelity Company).
Prevena is a single-use wound management device which is placed over a closed surgical incision. The device applies continuous negative pressure for up to 7 days which helps to promote healing by holding the incision edges together, drawing fluid and exudate out of the wound, reducing oedema and stimulating perfusion. It is recommended that the device should be considered as an alternative to standard of care in people at risk of developing surgical site complications. Specialist commentators agreed that using Prevena could lead to reduced surgical site infection, incision wound reopening and length of stay. It was also noted that the use of Prevena would likely lead to cost-savings because of a reduced need for daily dressing changes and reduced surgical site complications.
