Diabetes is a significant healthcare challenge. The new diabetes prevalence model, produced by the Public Health England National Cardiovascular Intelligence Network, estimates the total number of adults with type 1 and 2 diabetes in England to be 3.8 million, approximately 90% of which are type 2, characterised by insulin resistance (McInnes, 2012; Public Health England, 2016).
