Surgery is one of the most important treatments offered by todays NHS. As a result, the care delivered to patients in the pre-operative, intra-operative and postoperative stages form one of the cornerstones of nursing care. This article provides an overview of best practice and highlights the fundamental aspects of care delivery and focuses on the knowledge and skills required to successfully manage patients. Particular focus is given to the screening of high risk surgical patients to avoid postoperative wound complications, as well as the management of postoperative wounds.
